Kianja (Sunshine in Swahili), 18-year-old soul singing sensation headlines the Youth Takeover Stage at Crystal Palace Overground Festival.
She made her UK debut at age 12-13 coming second at the ‘Rock Da Mic’ competition and appeared on the ‘Blessed Souls’ stage. She also acted and sang at the Edinburgh Festival back in 2014. Kianja is constantly refining her art. Her stunning voice resounds with jazz, RnB, roots, and urban flavours. She has been described as a cross between Lauryn Hill, Ella Fitzgerald and Amy Winehouse. In 2015, Kianja caught the eye of London after taking her music to the streets and was shortlisted in the Final of Mayor of London Boris Johnson’s GIGS music competition – the biggest ever search to find the capital’s most talented street musician. Most notably, the famous Jazz Warriors of London featuring the cream of jazz musicians have also taken young Kianja under their wing and she has made jaw dropping guest appearances with them. She is now a member of Tomorrow’s Warriors the top layer of young jazz talent in London.
We are really excited to feature this amazing new talent on our very first Youth Takeover Stage – welcome Kianja to the Crystal Palace Overground Festival!! Have a listen to her Sound Cloud where she releases new music on the 11th of every month or connect with her directly on Twitter.
